Self Cleaning Glass

Conservatory Glass      Double Glazing      Thermal Glazing      Self Cleaning

One of the great disadvantages of a large area of glass in any room of the house is the problem of cleaning it. This is not so bad when you are dealing with vertical windows but a bigger problem when roof windows are involved or when a full conservatory or orangery is the building in question. Not long ago, mention self-cleaning glass and the men in the white coats would be called.

However, following an intensive research and development programme by Pilkington - inventors of the universally used float glass process, and the world's leading glass manufacturer – there now exist products that do just that.

A must for conservatories, skylights, glass doors and windows; self-cleaning glass is revolutionizing the way homeowners feel about glass in their homes. These new products unique dual-action coating uses the forces of nature to help keep the glass clear of organic dirt, giving you not only the practical benefit of less cleaning, but also clearer, better-looking windows.

Using a "photocatalytic" process, the coating on the glass reacts with ultra-violet rays present in natural daylight to break down and disintegrate organic dirt. The second stage occurs when rainwater hits the glass. These glass panes are "hydrophilic" which means that instead of forming droplets, the water spreads evenly over the surface and as it runs off takes the dirt with it. Compared with conventional glass, the water also dries off very quickly without leaving unsightly drying spots.

This product is exceptionally useful where your house has lots of tress and shrubbery in the immediate vicinity of the conservatory. Self-cleaning glass will remove and prevent build-up of the green settlement that makes neglected conservatories and sunroom look quite awful.
