Conservatory Furniture
Cane Furniture
With so many housing developments in Ireland in the last decade, the country has become a trendsetter in all aspects of conservatory and sunroom interior design, not to mention every other room in the house.
The natural link of a conservatory to a garden or patio area generally means that, as a rule of thumb, casual furniture is a preferred option.
However, with conservatories and sunrooms there are no rules. You use the room for whatever purpose you see fit. For example, many Irish homes the space as a dining room or breakfast area, thus freeing up space in the kitchen. If you decide on that course then your furniture content is built around your dining table and chairs. These will not be formal so the rest of the furniture will have to be of bright nature.
Many people use conservatories or sunrooms as an additional reception room where parties can be held, particularly in the summer months when the patio or garden area can be brought into play.
The very popular option in furniture for conservatories in particular is cane. Cane furniture is light, comes in a wide variety of colours and designs and can be moved easily, either to add to patio furniture if the Irish weather will allow it, or to revamp the room with something else for winter use.
There is a bewildering choice of cane furniture suitable for conservatory or sunroom use.
Thick cane construction is solid and chunky, yet light and reflective of the easy living air of the room. Rattan, which is a lighter cousin of the latter, is also very suitable and lends itself to elaborate designs because of its flexibility.
Any form of cane furniture is durable and robust and has the capacity to withstand the harsh treatment likely to be meted out to it during its lifetime. It can tolerate the excesses of light and heat provided by the sun and even when scratches and marks appear on it they seem to have a positive effect on the finish, compared to what contemporary furniture would look like with similar damage.
If you are going to go the contemporary route consider carefully all the options available. The most potent enemy is sunlight combined with heat. Hardwood furniture will fade or ‘shadow” itself very easily. Equally so, choice of fabric is very relevant. Leather, or vinyl covered seating will need frequent restorative treatment to combat the effects of sunlight. Fabric furniture covering needs to be of the washable variety because the rooms lend themselves to mud and grass being brought in from the garden.
Ideally, when the room is not in use for prolonged periods it is better to cover the effects with furniture protection blankets.
A conservatory/sunroom in essence can be any room you want it to be. Your choice of furniture will create the mood, ambience and character of the room. As they are rooms that can be used all year round with changing tones or themes, the interior designer hiding inside you can be allowed out to express itself!
